Arivushala’s ‘OTW’: Revolutionizing Hip-Hop with Unique Regional Flair

When you think of Palakkad, Kerala, you might imagine serene paddy fields, warm sunny afternoons, and a rich cultural tapestry. But hold that thought—because a groundbreaking hip-hop collective named Arivushala is about to shake up those preconceptions. The eclectic group of artists– Ashaan, the fearless lawyer turned wordsmith; CHNGRA, the beat wizard; Ibnu Kopz, the understated mic maestro; Nihal, the melody genius; and Zee Zee, the storytelling designer—each bring their unique flair to the table, making Arivushala a force to be reckoned with. Their music is distributed by Kochi-based talent management company Alt+ who even hosted the launch event of this album. From their social media at least, the launch event looks like it was a hit. The band’s dynamic blend of diverse skills and artistic visions creates a melting pot of creativity that’s impossible to ignore.

Today, we spotlight their latest album, OTW. This project sprang from random meetings and organically formed friendships, transforming their shared experiences into a powerful musical narrative. Each of the seven tracks is carefully curated to showcase their collective talent and individual brilliance. In this review, we’ll take you track by track through OTW, exploring why Arivushala is the new name to remember in hip-hop circles. Prepare yourself for a sonic adventure like no other!

Beginning with an intriguing skit that samples the vagabond circus teams of urban Palakkad, “OTW,” produced by Nihal, sets the stage for what is to come. The track immediately captivates with its distinctive beat style, making it impossible not to groove along. The song serves as an engaging introduction, drawing listeners into Arivushala’s dynamic world. Picture a circus just beginning, brimming with excitement and anticipation, culminating in a thunderous climax.

Their second track titled “DHOORAM” is where you’ll see all five core members of Arivushala collaborating and creating something unique. The track ushers you in with a delicate hushy reverb, followed by intriguing crinkling sounds that make way for a blend of Malayalam and English. This bilingual harmony feels like a new genre itself. Drawing inspiration from an introspective trip to Kodaikanal, the track’s ethereal beats, created by CHNGRA, perfectly encapsulate the group’s sonic identity. It’s abundantly clear that these artists have not just mastered their craft but have revolutionized it.

The third track titled “‘MAANAVAN’” kicks off with intense energy, undeniably a banger. Nihal’s bold and melodic trap composition, crafted with frequent collaborator amxn, delves into the human condition and the artist’s quest for recognition in an ever-shifting world. With a heavy bassline and infectious cowbells, amxn lures listeners deep into the soundscape. The track’s fast-paced vibe and outstanding vocals make it a standout. This song showcases Arivushala’s knack for experimenting with sounds and leaving you eagerly anticipating more.

“‘SPANDANAM’” is a party hit and sees Ashaan doing what he does best: delivering fast flows with hard-hitting lyrics. The track dives into the dual life of an artist juggling the Indian legal system by day while exploring his creative expression by night. amxn masterfully lays down the backdrop with irresistible Jersey club bounce and heavy trap influences. Occasional African beats maintain the groove, ensuring no energy drop. The song’s protest rap spirit, tied together with a constant horn in the background, makes it a high-octane musical experience. The vibe is real and electrifying.

The fifth track, ‘‘FOSHO’,’ slows down the tempo, pulling us into a winding journey of self-reflection. CHNGRA melds boombap snares with a gritty bassline to evoke nostalgia, dissecting themes of creative self-doubt countered by confident braggadocio. The lyrics cut through, as if Arivushala speaks directly to each listener, bursting with honesty and innovation. Traditional kottu percussion interlace the track, nodding to regional soundscapes and challenging conventional rap. It’s a contemplation of one’s current self versus aspirations, sharply defining not just what hip hop is, but also what it could become. Absolutely engrossing.

The album hits another high with the fifth track, “‘MOODU’,” a powerhouse delivered by Ibnu Kopz. He swiftly takes on critics and supporters alike with boundless energy and relentless bars. The song exudes a unique rhythm that will get you moving, even if you try resisting. As the track progresses, the inclusion of dhol and regional drums adds a festive layer that’s truly addictive. Thanks to CHNGRA’s masterful composition, blending robust trap influences and culminating in a dappankuthu explosion, “‘MOODU’” captures the essence of a dynamic cultural celebration.

The final track, “SHUBADINAM,” penned by Zee Zee, delivers a powerful punch right from the start. It begins with a slow burn that meticulously deconstructs societal flaws, infusing every beat with incisive layers of truth. The composition is intense, showcasing the true prowess of collaboration among extraordinary talents. The Memphis-inspired heavy beat and relentless lyrical onslaught will ignite your inner passion, leaving you reflecting on its themes long after the music stops. The menacing metal inspired rock outro, co-produced by CHNGRA, coupled with Zee’s breathy tension, brings the album to a dramatic and unforgettable close.
